Big Mistakes - Netflix

Dan Levy's first major project since Schitt's Creek arrived on Netflix earlier this month and it is not quite the runaway hit everyone was expecting.

Blackmailed into working for local gangsters, two deeply incapable siblings become the most disorganised duo in organised crime. Levy plays Nicky, an uptight small-town pastor; his sister Morgan is his starkly contrasting, slightly chaotic schoolteacher counterpart. After a brief lapse of judgement, Morgan shoplifts a necklace from a pawn shop, said necklace turns out to belong to a local crime gang and suddenly neither of them can find their way back to normal life.

The first two episodes are a little slow, tonally uneven and dimly lit, but the show finds its footing in unexpected ways, pivoting into something richer and smarter than its opening hour delivers. It currently sits at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics split between those who found it derivative and those who found it delightful.

One of the standout performances comes from the magnificent Laurie Metcalf as Linda, the siblings' mother, simultaneously running the local hardware store and a mayoral campaign, and absolutely stealing every scene she's in.

Our verdict? Stick with it past episode two. It's an easy weekend binge in one of the most crowded TV months of the year and Levy, as always, is enormously watchable with impeccable comedic timing. If occasionally a little too much like David Rose in a dog collar.
