David Hare's 32nd play turns his gaze on the world of late Victorian theatre and its two greatest stars, Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, who devoted their lives to elevating acting into an art form. Ralph Fiennes is suitably magnetic as the workaholic Irving (a prototype, it turns out, for his employee Bram Stoker's Dracula), while Miranda Raison is luminous as the endlessly girlish, endlessly underestimated Terry. Witty, theatrical, and full of beautiful moments, including a recreation of the famous Beetlewing dress immortalised by John Singer Sargent. An affectionate love letter to the stage.
